OUR INITIATIVE

TerraNova is a local Agroecology Urban Farm Initiative that has been producing delicious fresh products and hosting a variety of fun activities since 2018. We strive to make the most of everything the soil has to offer. Our products are fresh from the field, so you can be sure you are buying the best quality produce.

OUR MISSION

Natural And Local Produce For the Masses

We emphasize on providing accessibility of local agricultural and processed foods for the people of Puerto Rico. As islanders we are extremely vulnerable to the natural disasters we will continue to experience, having a critical effect on our food system sovereignty. TerraNova’s resilient production model aims to address these circumstances and contribute to greater sustainability.

THE BEGINNING

Serving the Community since 2018

TerraNova Urbana arose in response to the lack of fresh and local food production and the inaccessibility to land. That is why in 2018 we started off renting home patios in urban spaces and turning them into small scale vegetable production farms, reaching around 2 acres in total rented land. Unfortunately, we lost all rented home patios and had to shift our business model from one of production to one aligned with resale of local products to maintain the business afloat. Nonetheless as farmers, we do strive to reclaim our purpose, which is not only providing accessibility to local food but also producing it.

COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA)

Proposal

TerraNova’s distribution channels are mainly directed through CSAs, which stands for “community-supported agriculture”, a model developed since the 1980s. In this model, consumers buy their share of the expected production, as in fruit and vegetables, off a farm before the sowing period and in return obtain a weekly portion of the product during the harvest season.

WHAT’S HAPPENING

Currently, due to inaccessibility of land, the fresh products offered in our CSAs are resale from other local farms. In addition, we have collaborations with farmers and chefs that contribute with processed food, including artesanal bread, yogurts, kombuchas, sofritos and eggs.

OUR CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Designing our business revenue model around a circular economy can help mitigate our organic waste problem. By closing our production lines and transforming our organic waste we can help reduce the surplus directed towards saturated landfills.

JOSÉ ANGELES

For Jose, facing the reality of spending more than 60% of his income on food, most of it unhealthy as it's cheaper and more accessible for many young adults, was the big catalyst that motivated him to pursue his agricultural dreams.

NAOMY CANDELARIA

Naomy has always been very environmentally conscious and as she kept confronting the consequences of our ways of living in regards to the management of our natural resources she quickly understood how much our food system is related to it and how much it could contribute to facing these consequences in a more resilient way.
